Have you just started your orthodontic treatment and you’d like to know the important details that will change the way you live your life while you transform your smile? If so, we are happy to help you! The following questions are those that have been frequently asked by patients, and we are happy to inform you of the answers to make your experience with braces more convenient and easy:
How long do I have to wear braces?
Your treatment time will depend on your specific smile situation. Treatment can generally last from 9 months to 5 years, but it’s more common to go through treatment for 18-24 months. If you would like to know how long it would take your smile to change, you are more than welcome to come into our office and ask your orthodontist.
Can I look cool in braces?
Yes, of course you can look cool in braces! With the advances in dental care today, you are able to personalize your braces to add spark and flare as you smile. As you attend your tightening appointments, you will be able to choose a rubber band color, or multiple, and use them to decorate your awesome smile. Many people also look cool with braces because many believe they are like “grillz,” which are oral jewels that add shine to the smile.
Do braces hurt?
There will be times when your teeth feel sore after your tightening appointment, but that is completely normal and necessary. It is a way of telling you that your teeth are quickly moving. The soreness won’t last long and you can take over-the-counter pain medication if needed. Some people also have a hard time with the brackets and wires cutting the lips and cheeks. If you have this issue, you can fix it by covering the brackets and wires with your orthodontic wax. The wax will protect you from the pocking and prodding of the braces.
Can I still play sports while I have braces?
Yes, you can still play sports while you have braces. However, it’s strongly recommended that you wear a mouth guard while doing so. The mouth guard will protect your teeth, lips, tongue, cheeks, and appliance as you play.
What can’t I eat while I have braces?
Unfortunately, what you eat matters when you have braces. You need to care for your appliance as much as possible, and one of those ways is by avoiding hard-to-eat and sticky foods, like:
• Caramel apples
• Gummy bears
• Sticky or chunky peanut butter
• Soda or sugary drinks
Although we recommend avoiding these foods, you can eat some of them if you cut them into small pieces, like the apples, bagels, and hamburgers. If the food is chewy and sticky, we do not recommend eating it, even if it’s cut into small pieces.
