Even though your braces are strong enough to move your teeth, they are not quite strong enough to handle the pressure from certain foods. This means you need to be careful when eating. If you’re not, there is a chance your appliances can get damaged and your treatment results can be delayed. So, please follow Dr. Christopher Liang’s instructions on what to avoid eating, and how to eat certain foods.
First and foremost, please avoid eating sticky and hard foods. This is because these foods can add pressure to your appliance and damage the brackets to the point they come off your teeth. The sticky foods can also cling to your teeth and create problems like cavities. The foods we recommend avoiding include caramel, Skittles, nuts, popcorn, corn chips, ice cubes, Starbursts, toffee, gummy bears, pizza crust, and other hard and sticky foods.
Second, simplify chewing. To do so, cut larger foods into small pieces, pop the pieces into your mouth, and chew them with your molars. This helps you avoid damage to your appliance. Some examples of the foods you should cut up include apples, chicken wings, spare ribs, carrots, corn on the cob, pizza, and pears.
