The holidays are just around the corner and with them come parties, friends, and food. But as an adult with orthodontia, holiday food can be hard. There are a lot of things you have eaten your whole life during the holidays, that you suddenly you cannot have! But, being a responsible adult, you understand that your oral health comes first.

To navigate the holidays successfully, know what foods to avoid with braces. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends cutting out such things as bubblegum, caramel, gumdrops, gummy candy, hard candy, hard pretzels, jelly beans, licorice, lollipops, nuts, popcorn, and taffy. These can brake braces or render them less effective. These treats can also get stuck in between braces and teeth, increasing the risk of cavities.

This can be a discouraging list of don’t-eats. Don’t fret! There are still a lot of foods you CAN eat. As an adult, you have more control over the foods you choose to eat. Choose to include these delicious holiday foods into your meals and parties, and you’ll be feeling festive in no time!

Here are some tasty treat options:

–thinly sliced apples sprinkled with cinnamon-sugar
–brownies cut into holiday shapes and decorated
–cheese platters
–custard pie
–fruit pie
–fudge (no nuts)
–ice cream
–orange slices dipped in chocolate
–peanut butter cookies (no nut pieces)
–pumpkin pie
